Brain and Spine tumors

As in other parts of the body, tumors may develop in the brain and spine . They can arise from the skull, spinal bones  or from the layers covering brain or spinal cord tissue or from the within brain or spinal cord.

It can be broadly classified as cancerous or non cancerous tumors. Non cancerous tumors are generally meningiomas, neurofibromas, schwannomas,Pituitary adenomas,dermoid, epidermoid ,craniopharyngiomas, osteomas etc. Where as cancerous tumors are mostly tumors arising within the brain/ spinal cord- gliomas, astrocytomas , or that has spread from cancers elsewhere in the body ie - secondaries.

Symptoms: Headache, Vomitimg,Seizures( fits), Weakness of hands or legs, abnormal sensation in limbs etc.

Most of the benign tumors can cured. Outcome of cancers depends on the grade and the treatment.

Investigations- MRI brain / spine + contrast, CT brain or spine, MR spectroscopy,  whole PET CT.

After complete workup treatment is suggested . Its mostly microsurgical excision (sometimes endoscopic) followed by follow up treatment with radiation and chemotherapy in cancers or where there is residual tumor.

1.Prior appointment will minimise the inconvenience of waiting for long.

2.Get your old reports- CT scans, MRI scans , PET scan etc. Please bring films and CD if it was given along with the reports.

3.Further investigations may be advised based on need.

4.The best treatment plan that suits you is explained to you. 

5.If proceeding with surgery, investigations to check your fitness to withstand the procedure and anesthesia are advised.After getting cardiologist and anesthesia  clearance regarding fitness, a suitable date is allotted .

6.Admission is one day prior to the procedure.

7.All procedures are done under general anesthesia.Surgery make time 4 - 12 hours depending on the complexity of the tumor.

8. Patient is kept in icu for one day and shifted to room if the postoperative ct scan and patient general condition is good.

9.He is observed for 3 days and discharged.

10.Suture removal is done after 1 week - 10 days of surgery.

11.Biopsy report is recieved in 1 week time ,Based on it and the extent of tumor removal, further treatment is advised .

12. Follow up scans are advise at regular intervals based on need.

13.Patient has to use medication for fits for some period of time after surgery.
